Description

The 2019 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen has the cargo space of a large SUV but drives like a compact car. It is a flexible solution for drivers who have a lot on their plate. The SportWagen model takes the classic Volkswagen Golf model and stretches out the back end to serve a broad range of needs.

New Features in the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen

For 2019, Volkswagen has downgraded the standard displacement on the SportWagen front-wheel-drive models from a 1.8L turbocharged gas engine (1.8T) to a 1.4L turbo engine. The horsepower has dipped down to 147 hp from the 170 hp in front-wheel drive models. Thankfully, the stronger 1.8T is still available from the 2018 Golf and Jetta models as standard equipment in the desirable (all-wheel-drive) S 4-Motion model.

Nevertheless, the 1.4L engine makes up for the lower horsepower when it is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission that uses those horses more efficiently. All models come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission. However, the Volkswagen Golf 1.8T engine has an optional dual-clutch 6-speed automatic that has crisper shifts than a traditional automatic transmission.

Although the higher-trim technical details appear to downgrade the model, the trade-off is better (37 MPG highway, 29 MPG city) fuel economy and cleaner emissions. In addition to the powertrain options, many new safety features are available, including:

  • Automated emergency braking to avoid accidents when distracted
  • Forward-collision warning to warn drivers of a potential crash
  • Pedestrian detection to warn when people are crossing in front of the vehicle
  • Rear cross-traffic alert to warn when cars are crossing behind the vehicle
  • Blind-spot monitoring to warn when there is a vehicle passing close by
  • Automatic high beams (only on SE) make it easy to see at night
  • Lane-keeping assist (only on SE) warns drivers when they are swerving
  • Adaptive cruise control (only on SE) auto adapts the speed to keep pace with other cars

Available trims include:

  • S (base model)
  • S 4-Motion (adds all-wheel drive to base model S)
  • SE (luxury model)
  • SEL (luxury model)

The SportWagen Volkswagen Golf S 4-Motion may be the best value to finance out of all the 2019 Volkswagen vehicles. It comes standard with 6.5-inch infotainment touchscreens, roof rails, heated front seats, and the 1.8T that we all know and love for its power. The 2019 Volkswagen SE model adds some innovative safety features but for over $5,000 more than the 4-Motion model.

When you finance a 2017 pre-owned VW SportWagen that has been certified by a dealer, you may find a good warranty on the car. But, be sure to ask the sales team details about the 2017 year and what type of service is covered by the VW warranty. The sales team may be able to help you find a 2017 pre-owned VW SportWagen that includes dealership service as part of the warranty details.

The sales team at the dealership will often let drivers find a model year of certified vehicles that include service. They will give you unlimited access to test driving. Full access to test the vehicles and have them inspected by a mechanic will guarantee a solid deal.

What Does the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Compete With?

The 2019 Golf SportWagen competes with the following cars:

Exterior Design of the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen

With its smooth European contours and rich piano paint finishes, the new Beetle was based off the Golf. The design looks futuristic with its LED headlights and taillights but still holds true to its heritage with classic Volkswagen Golf colors like Tornado Red.

The rails on the roof come standard and provide versatility for active drivers. The vehicle's rails can be used for mounting skis, a bike rack, luggage, or any other type of sporting equipment you may have in mind. The large aluminum wheels are engineered to magnify the precise handling, and the extra foot of cargo space over the ordinary Golf model is there when you need it.

Interior Design of the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen

The 2019 Golf SportWagen features a luxurious interior for the price range of these cars. The backup camera, heated side mirrors, and chrome bezels make it even sweeter. If you choose the 2019 Volkswagen Golf SE SportWagen options of faux leather, navigation, and panoramic sunroof view, it can only add to the beauty.

What Technology Comes with the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen?

The 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with digital atlas, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth connectivity make it a deal for entertainment. The new safety systems have already been mentioned above.

The SE and SEL models upgrade the infotainment screen to 8 inches. The SE and SEL models also include:

  • Push-button keyless starting system
  • Tire monitoring as a standard feature
  • Universal garage door opener (optional)

What’s the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Like to Drive?

The 2019 Volkswagen SportWagen is easy for anyone to drive. Despite the extra foot of chassis and the added weight of the SportWagen, it handles as well as any Golf or Jetta around the bends. The 4-Motion all-wheel-drive system transfers the power with the precision that you would expect from a more luxurious car.

Should I Buy a New Volkswagen Golf SportWagen?

The 2019 Golf SportWagen is an excellent value, especially if you choose the 4-Motion trim option. It is hard to get this type of handling and versatility out on the market today without spending a lot. The latest 2019 model carries over a lot of features from the 2018 model.

Should I Buy a Used Volkswagen Golf SportWagen?

A used SportWagen may not have all the latest features. If you finance Certified Pre-Owned cars, however, the warranty benefits can make a used car a safe investment. Drivers who finance Certified Pre-Owned SportWagen models at the dealership report the highest satisfaction rates.

Price Point

The base price for a 2019 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen starts at just $21,895 if you keep the manual transmission. The 4-Motion is priced at just $25,290. The automatic transmission can be added as an option for just $1,100 more.

The manual 2019 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen SE starts off at $30,890. That's a big jump from the base price, but it includes the following additional features:

  • Panoramic sunroof view
  • Leatherette seating
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Adaptive cruise control

With these features, the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen competes well with much pricier vehicles in its class.

  • Responsive acceleration

Model History

The Volkswagen Golf SportWagen replaced the Jetta wagon in 2015 and filled a niche that other auto manufacturers were not filling. Since then, however, numerous compact crossover SUVs known as CUVs have been released to the market. These vehicles ride high like an SUV with a bird's-eye view of the road while still handling lithely like a car.

The 2019 Volkswagen Golf 4-Motion SportWagen features the coveted 4-Motion (all-wheel drive) found in the VW Alltrack and Tiguan. This makes the 2019 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen dealer price a great value for a high-end vehicle in the crossover and wagon market. You won't find 4-Motion for less money.

Volkswagen has a long history of producing wagons. In fact, the first Volkswagen model sold in the USA was called a Victory Wagon, but it only sold two models the first year. Many later models would look like station wagons.

The history of wagon models from Volkswagen dates back to the 1600 Squareback wagon. This was followed by the 1982-1988 Volkswagen Quantum, 1987-89 Fox Wagon, and then various Golf and Jetta wagon models over the following years. The Volkswagen Golf SportWagen carries on this long tradition with modern updates perfect for today's drivers who are always on the go.

Dynamic (moving) test results (Tip or No Tip) and measured rollover-related properties determine vehicle's risk of rollover in single vehicle crash and its rollover rating. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is.

Note

Male: Average sized adult male dummy in 35-MPH crash into fixed barrier. Rating is evaluation of injury to head, neck, chest, legs. Female: Small-sized adult female dummy in 35-mph crash into fixed barrier. Rating is evaluation of injury to head, neck, chest, legs.
