Toyota Yaris: Everything You Need to Know

About the Toyota Yaris:

The Toyota Yaris is a subcompact sedan that offers agile handling and excellent gas mileage. The Yaris starts at less than $16K, and this makes it one of the most affordable new cars on the market.

Despite its humble price tag, the Yaris has a relatively premium look. This is evident both in its sheet metal and its cabin design.

This spunky little sedan seats five passengers, and buyers can choose between manual and automatic transmissions. Power is sent to the car’s front wheels. Toyota has announced that a hatchback body style will be added to the Yaris’ lineup in the 2020 model year.

There are some excellent subcompact cars on the market. The Yaris sets itself apart by offering impressive refinement in key areas.

What’s New in the 2019 Toyota Yaris?

For the 2019 model year, the Yaris is sold in three trim levels:

  • Base L trim gets amenities such as air conditioning and power windows and door locks.
  • Mid-level LE trim brings in heated side mirrors and keyless entry and ignition.
  • The range-topping XLE adds automatic climate control and simulated leather upholstery.

The Yaris gets a name change for 2019. Last year’s Yaris iA sedan is now known simply as the Yaris. For 2019, the Yaris also gets a revised front grille.

What Does the 2019 Toyota Yaris Compete With?

Toyota’s Yaris competes with the following subcompact cars:

This affordable vehicle class makes it possible for shoppers to buy a new car for well under $20,000. The frugal Yaris is one of the most competent choices in this segment.

Exterior Design of the 2019 Toyota Yaris

The Yaris’ exterior design is elegant and understated. Other models in this segment have styling that’s more extroverted, but the Yaris’ sleek sheet metal quietly gets your attention.

An open-mouthed, hexagonal grille dominates the front fascia. The hood features sporty character lines that run parallel to the car’s upswept headlights. In profile, the Yaris shows off muscular fenders and a shapely roofline.

Base models run on 15-inch steel wheels and tires. Power-adjustable side mirrors are standard. The LE trim adds features like fog lights, 16-inch alloy wheels and a rear spoiler. The top XLE trim adds rain-sensing windshield wipers and automatic LED headlights.

Interior Style in the 2019 Toyota Yaris

Car shoppers would never be able to guess the Yaris’ modest price tag by looking at its cabin. The car’s interior has a thoroughly modern, upmarket appearance. Floating touchscreens are on trend these days, and the Yaris has one above its center stack. The sculpted dash is bookmarked with handsome, circular air vents. The materials used throughout the cabin are of good quality.

Front-row passengers enjoy roomy accommodations. But headroom and legroom will be tight for taller passengers in the second row.

What about trunk space? The Yaris provides 13.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity. This is a respectable figure for the segment.

The Yaris’ base L trim comes with interior feature like a steering column that tilts and telescopes to help drivers find an agreeable position behind the wheel. A folding rear seatback is also standard, and this allows larger items in the trunk. The options list includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

What Technology Comes in the 2019 Toyota Yaris?

These days, many budget-priced cars offer a modern range of the tech features. The 2019 Yaris is proof. Base models are equipped with Bluetooth phone and music streaming. Satellite radio is also standard, along with two USB ports and a 7.0-inch touchscreen.

The Yaris’ infotainment interface is as straightforward as it gets. It’s a breeze to use, with a logical menu structure.

There’s some bad news for those who like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring. These features aren’t offered on the Yaris.

What Kind of Safety Features are in the 2019 Toyota Yaris? The Yaris’ range of active safety features is a lot more limited than the lineup offered by rival models.

All Yaris sedans come with a rearview camera that helps you make safe rearward maneuvers. The Yaris also comes standard with a forward collision warning system and low-speed automatic emergency braking. This system can prevent low-speed accidents by automatically hitting the brakes to prevent an impending collision.

Unfortunately, that’s pretty much it when it comes to active safety features. Amenities like adaptive cruise control and a lane-departure warning system aren’t offered. These features are available on rival sedans.

What Is the 2019 Toyota Yaris Like to Drive?

Toyota’s Yaris provides driving dynamics that are smooth enough to make it a pleasant commuter car. The car is small enough to easily navigate tight spaces. This makes it well suited for urban travels.

The Yaris’ acceleration isn’t exactly blistering. Still, there’s enough power underfoot to enable confident highway maneuvers.

All Yaris sedans are equipped with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder powerplant. This engine provides 106 horsepower and 103 pound-feet of torque. All models are front-wheel drive.

Manual transmissions are a rarity these days, but the Yaris offers one for those who prefer to row their own gears. Base models come with a six-speed manual gearbox. A six-speed automatic transmission is optional.

The Yaris offers excellent fuel economy. According to the EPA, it achieves mileage of up to 32/40 mpg city/highway. This makes it one of the most fuel-efficient choices in its segment.

Should I Buy a New Toyota Yaris?

There’s a lot to like about the Toyota Yaris. While its styling isn’t as flamboyant as that of other models in this segment, it has a clean exterior design that some buyers will appreciate. It also comes with great fuel economy and a very attractive cabin.

The car’s most notable drawback is its narrow range of active safety features. If you want amenities like adaptive cruise control and a blind-spot warning system, you’ll have to look elsewhere.

Overall, though, we think many shoppers will be happy with what the Yaris has to offer.

Should I Buy a Used Toyota Yaris? Are There Any I Should Avoid?

There are many affordable used Yaris cars on the market, and they’re worth consideration. The car was last redesigned in the 2012 model year. That overhaul brought in improved cargo capacity and sportier handling. If you’re looking for a used model, a 2012 or newer Yaris deserves top priority.

How Much Does the New Toyota Yaris Cost?

The 2019 Toyota Yaris has a starting price of $15,600, and it comes with a manual transmission. With the LE trim, pricing starts at $17,700. The top XLE trim can be yours for under 20 grand. It starts at $18,700. Both the LE and XLE trim levels come standard with an automatic transmission.

Model History

The History of the Toyota Yaris

The Yaris made its U.S debut with the 2007 model. The car had previously been available in Europe, where it was a top seller. Initially, it was offered as either a sedan or a two-door hatchback. The Yaris was brought in to replace the outgoing Toyota Echo. Relative to the Echo, it was a vast improvement.

In 2009, a four-door hatchback joined the Yaris’ lineup.

Toyota gave the Yaris a redesign in the 2012 model year. The new model was almost three inches longer than its predecessor. This allowed it to provide a roomier back seat and improved cargo space. The car’s cabin took a huge step up in quality, and its handling benefited from significant upgrades.

The Yaris received styling revisions in the 2015 model year, and the quality of the materials used within the cabin was improved. Also, a touchscreen infotainment interface was added as standard equipment on all models.

The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is.

Male: Average sized adult male dummy in 35-MPH crash into fixed barrier. Rating is evaluation of injury to head, neck, chest, legs. Female: Small-sized adult female dummy in 35-mph crash into fixed barrier. Rating is evaluation of injury to head, neck, chest, legs.
