Ram 2500: Everything You Need to Know

About the Ram 2500:

The Ram 2500 is a full-size, heavy-duty pickup truck fully redesigned for 2019. The Ram 2500 has a wide product range. There are no less than twenty-nine different configurations available. The base Ram 2500 Tradesman is a regular cab 4x2. It’s an entry-level work truck retailing for $33,395. The range tops out at the 2500 4x4 Mega Cab Limited short wheelbase for $65,700.

All Ram 2500 models come standard with a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine. This engine delivers class-leading 410 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard. A 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel with a six-speed automatic is available for $9,100.

The Ram 2500 offers up to 19,780 pounds of towing and a 3,940-pound payload when properly equipped. There’s a host of aids to make towing and trailering easier.

Ram continues to use a standard tailgate design unlike some of its competitors. There’s an optional step available from Mopar. But shorter buyers may find the bed difficult to access, especially compared to the latest truck from other automakers. There’s an optional power release feature, but it is not reconfigurable in any way.

What’s New in the 2019 Ram 2500?

The new Ram Heavy Duty lineup debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2019. As part of the fifth generation, the Ram 2500 is completely redesigned. The frame components are both stronger and lighter than the previous generation. The powertrains and transmissions are upgraded. Interior and exterior styling is all-new. The only part seemingly left untouched is the tailgate.

What Does the 2019 Ram 2500 Compete With?

The heavy duty 2019 Ram 2500’s competitors include:

When shopping for a full-size heavy duty pickup truck, key comparisons include towing and payload capacities. In today’s modern pickups, trailering aids such as smart cameras and sensors are differentiators.

Exterior Design of the 2019 Ram 2500

A full-size pickup truck is always about big and muscular design. The Ram 2500 delivers with a huge grille in six distinct styles. The front bumper has a larger opening than before. This is actually functional, providing more airflow to the engine.

Along with unique grille designs, there are three different headlamp offerings. Halogen, full LED reflector, and full LED projector with adaptive lighting are available on the Ram 2500.

The Ram 2500 RamBox offers lockable storage on each side of the bed. For 2019, the RamBox adds a convenient 115-volt outlet with up to 400 watts of power.

Surprisingly, Ram did very little in the redesign to update its tailgate. There is an optional power release function, but the tailgate is generic compared to competitors. The Ram 1500 recently unveiled a clever split tailgate, but it’s not available yet on the heavy-duty pickups.

The Ram 2500 comes in a dizzying array of twenty-nine different exterior colors. These range from the basic black, white, and countless grays to Construction Yellow, Flame Red, and Hills Green.

Interior Style in the 2019 Ram 2500

The interior of the Ram 2500 is known for its user-friendly, technology-focused utility. For 2019, the instrument panel is more driver focused with accessible central controls. A 12-inch touchscreen is the centerpiece of the interior. An ergonomically designed line of switches and redundant climate control knobs enhance the experience.

The available driver information cluster is a 7-inch, full-color configurable display. It allows customization of a host of information for easy readability in a split-screen format.

The Ram 2500 offers four different audio systems. A 750-watt Harman Kardon system with seventeen speakers and an 8-inch subwoofer is the top of the line. An upgraded version of Sirius XM with 360L is offered. This includes over two hundred channels, on-demand programming, and enhanced play-by-play sports.

Acoustic glass and active noise cancelling keep the cabin quiet. The new climate control system has larger vents for faster defrosting. On diesel models, built-in electric heating elements warm up the cabin faster on cold days. Larger system controls complement gloved hands, a welcome touch for cold weather climates.

The Ram 2500 features push-button start across all trim levels and a rotary e-shifter dial on the HEMI V8. When equipped, buttons for hill descent control, transfer case controls, and axle lock are all readily accessible.

There’s storage aplenty in the Ram 2500. A huge center console swallows up a 15-inch laptop, briefcase or handbag. Five USB ports are in the center console. Wireless charging is available. Up to three 115-volt household plugs are also offered.

Heated seats and steering wheel are available starting at the Big Horn trim level and standard on the Laramie and above. Second-row heated seats are optional on the Laramie and standard on the Laramie Longhorn.

Choices abound in the Ram 2500 and the interior is no exception. There are up to twelve different interior colors in a variety of materials. All are soft grays, beiges, and black for durability. The Big Horn and Lone Star trims offer the most variety in exterior and interior color choices.

What Technology Comes in the 2019 Ram 2500?

The Ram 2500 full size pickup truck is known for its stunning interior. The 2019 Ram Heavy Duty features a fully customizable 12-inch touchscreen. The large, vertical screen is the centerpiece of the interior. It utilizes the Uconnect system. The screen can project applications in a split-screen format simultaneously such as navigation and climate control or radio. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both supported.

Ram 2500 offers heavy duty active noise cancelling, creating a quiet, refined cabin. Wireless charging is available. There are several towing-aid technologies offered. These include an optional trailer mounted camera and a 360-degree camera paired with proximity sensors. The Ram’s large, convex mirrors also help with maneuvering the truck in traffic and when trailering.

The Ram 2500 offers cargo monitoring on upper trims. A cargo-view camera keeps an eye on the bed in real time. The Parkview rear back-up camera is integrated into the tailgate handle. It projects a high-resolution image onto the center stack screen when reversing. The display includes static or dynamic grid lines.

Cleverly, the tire pressure monitoring system tracks up to six tires on the vehicle. It also monitors up to twelve tires on trailers.

What Kind of Safety Features are in the 2019 Ram 2500?

The Ram 2500 is stacked with safety features. These include automatic emergency braking and a 360-degree camera display.

The Ram offers adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross path detection. There are six air bags including side inflatable curtains. Mirror-mounted rear spotlights guide the Ram 2500 when reversing with trailers in the dark. Convex trailer-tow mirrors provide additional rearward visibility.

What is the 2019 Ram 2500 Like to Drive?

The new Ram 2500 is a big, wide truck, but is surprisingly well behaved. The ride and suspension are smooth, especially with some payload. The 2500 handles city potholes and country lanes with remarkable grace.

In everyday use the Ram 2500 provides crisp handling. Its solid steering feel is satisfying. The 6.4-liter HEMI engine is eager to propel the truck into motion. There’s more than enough power to keep pace at speed, even on the steepest hills.

The Ram 2500’s power and capability is apparent when towing and trailering. The truck stays steady and true, with precise steering and excellent braking. The cameras provide additional reassurance and gridlines help with parking. The cabin stays quiet, whether towing an empty horse trailer or a large machine.

For off-roading, few vehicles compare to the 2019 Ram Power Wagon. Locking front and rear differentials, disconnecting sway bar, and custom suspension team up for unmatched off-road utility. The Power Wagon comes with a 360-degree camera, including forward view. This helps with navigating obstacles on and off road.

The Power Wagon content package is also available on the base Tradesman, ideal for conquering muddy and unpaved construction sites.

Should I Buy a 2019 Ram 2500?

The Ram 2500 is all new for 2019. With no less than twenty-nine configurations, there’s a model for every buyer. Cab styles range from a two-door regular to a four-door jumbo crew cab called the Mega Cab. The traditional, barebones tailgate is not competitive though. The regular cab comes with an eight-foot long bed. The crew cab has either a six-foot short bed or the long bed. The Mega Cab sacrifices the bed for cabin room, so it’s only available with a short bed. The Ram 2500 is award-winning, garnering praise from the most renowned outlets in the automotive industry. It’s nabbed several “best truck” awards. It should definitely be on your shopping list.

Should I Buy a Used Ram 2500? Are There Any I Should Avoid?

Since the 2019 Ram 2500 is a fully redesigned model, used ones may be hard to find. Previous generations won’t have some of the utility and capability of the current version. But if price is a concern, find the newest, highest trim you can afford in a used model.

How Much Does the 2019 Ram 2500 Cost?

The Ram 2500 Tradesman starts at $33,645 for a two-wheel-drive version. The Tradesman is designed for the working owner, offering capability, dependability and value in a commercial grade format. The Tradesman uses a 6.4-liter heavy duty V8 HEMI engine. This is tied to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Maximum towing capacity is 19,780 pounds and payload capacity of 3,940 pounds.

There are twenty-nine different configurations and prices for the Ram 2500. Only six of those are under $40,000. Nine are between $40,050-$49,300. Eight trims are between $52,000-$59,400. The remaining six trims are over $60,700.

Model History

The History of the Ram 2500: 25 Years of the Ram 2500

It’s been twenty-five years since Dodge switched to “Ram” in its truck branding. Of course, Dodge Ram dates back as far as the 1930s. But it wasn’t until 1994 that Ram began offering heavy-duty diesel engines. In 2009, Ram Truck brand launched as a stand-alone division within Fiat-Chrysler.

The all-new 2019 Ram 2500 is built in Saltillo Truck Assembly plant in Mexico.
