2019 Mini Cooper Convertible Overview

The 2019 Mini Cooper Convertible is a punchy compact. It's known for its spirited performance and charmingly retro cabin. This four-passenger compact car even offers enough customizations to rival luxury vehicles.

Each trim supplies a livelier engine than the last. However, all Mini Convertible models inject your daily drive with fun. These vehicles also feature turbo engines and grippy tires.

Why You Want the 2019 Mini Convertible

There’s no compact convertible quite like this one. In fact, drivers won’t want to miss the Mini Cooper Convertible’s retro style and speedy performance.

Some competing vehicles, like the Volkswagen Beetle, have retro style. However, they lack the Mini’s sporty driving dynamics.

On the flip side, other competing cars—like the Mazda MX-5—deliver sporty performance. They lack the Mini's head-turning power and customizations, though.

The 2019 Mini Cooper Convertible speaks to drivers who want to tailor their ride to suit their personal style. You can even add Union Jacks to your Mini’s mirrors or headrests. Whether you prefer one racing stripe or two, these sporty four-seat cars cater to your tastes.

Even the interior offers a long list of premium options.

New Trim Structure for 2019

For 2019, the Mini Convertible offers a new trim model hierarchy.

The familiar Cooper, Cooper S, and John Cooper Works models are still available. These models are also still mainly differentiated by their powertrains. These Mini Convertible models are further divided into three sub-trims: Classic, Signature, and Iconic.

The Classic version of each doesn’t add anything to these already well-equipped models. It leaves each of the above trims as is.

Feature highlights from the Classic Cooper include full power accessories and high-tech safety gear. The rearview camera is one example of such gear.

The Cooper S is a bit sportier with standard dual exhaust tips and a hood scoop.

The Classic version of the John Cooper Works trim features a longer list of performance gear. These include a sportier suspension and accessories like a rear spoiler and sport steering wheel.

For 2019, the Signature version of the vehicle adds premium heated front seats and dual-zone automatic climate control.

The Signature Cooper features 16-inch wheels. The Signature Cooper S offers either 16- or 17-inch wheels.

On the new Mini Signature John Cooper Works, adaptive dampers smooth out your ride.

For both the Cooper S and John Cooper Works, the Signature sub-trim adds driver safety aids like forward collision warning.

The new Mini Iconic sub-trim is the top level. It adds a long list of finery to your vehicle. Add it to any of the Mini Convertible models for premium leather upholstery and all the latest infotainment gear.

The Iconic sub-trim also includes the Mini navigation system. If you do a lot of traveling, this navigation system will come in handy.

It comes with the Active Driving Assist package as well. This includes a wireless charging pad and Apple CarPlay iPhone integration.

Which Mini Cooper Convertible Should You Buy?

There’s no “best” new Mini trim level per se. Buy the Mini Convertible model that delivers the features you crave at a price that works for you.

For example, though all the powertrains supply a sporty performance, the John Cooper Works is the best model for speed demons. Whatever your preferences, you can create the best vehicle for you.

Is the Mini Cooper Convertible Automatic?

Each of the 2019 Mini Cooper Convertible powertrains comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission. However, these vehicles also offer a six-speed automatic transmission as an option.

Are All Mini Coopers Convertible?

No. It’s a common misnomer that all Mini Coopers are convertible. Some are Hardtops.

There are two Hardtop door options: the Hardtop 2 Door and Hardtop 4 Door models. Only the Mini Cooper Convertible and Roadster—available briefly from 2012 to 2015—will give you the full drop-top experience. What’s a Certified Pre-Owned Mini Convertible?

Certified pre-owned Minis undergo extensive inspections. Only those that pass every test become certified. They typically cost more than non-certified used Minis but also feature more extensive warranty coverage.

With proper maintenance, your certified used Mini Cooper Convertible will be dependable. If you're not a motoring enthusiast or car expert, don't worry. Buying a certified used Mini Cooper Convertible puts your mind at ease.

Model History

BMW relaunched the modern Mini Convertible in the early 2000s. The German auto manufacturer put a new spin on an old classic.

The current version of this compact convertible is in its third generation. These models have retained their iconic retro style over time. Inside, though, they have continued to evolve.

Below, we’ve highlighted the changes you should consider as you shop the used market.

Third-Generation Mini Convertible: 2016-Current Model Year

For the 2016 model year, Mini updated the Convertible so that it featured the same powertrain choices as the Hardtop door models. The 2019 Mini introduced cutting-edge tech features. These include Apple CarPlay smartphone integration and an updated infotainment interface.

The third-generation base Cooper powertrain is a turbo 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. It makes 134 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque.

Check out the Cooper S for greater speed. Its turbo four-cylinder engine offers greater athleticism. It has 189 horses and 207 pound-feet of torque.

Finally, the John Cooper Works version of the Convertible offers thrilling speed. Its turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine makes 228 horses and 236 pound-feet of torque. If you're a motoring enthusiast, you will prefer this powertrain.

Every Mini Convertible features front-wheel drive.

You should be able to find third-generation Mini Convertible options at your local dealer. Although these vehicles are the most recent models to generate sales, check a pre-owned vehicle's maintenance record before you buy. You don't want to be stuck paying for unnecessary parts down the road.

Second-Generation Mini Convertible: 2009-2015

When the second-generation Mini Convertible appeared, it brought peppier performance and increasingly modern tech features.

When you take these models out for a test spin, you'll enjoy the trademark sporty performance. At the dealer, you'll find that these used Mini Convertibles come at a reasonable price, too.

As with the previous generation, these models offered three engine options. However, they also introduced greater fuel economy and reduced emissions. Features like Auto Start Stop and brake regeneration helped make the most of the Mini Convertible’s fuel economy.

First-Generation Mini Convertible: 2005-2008

Not much time has passed since the Mini Convertible first returned to the roadways. It revived the 1960s classic Mini Cooper exterior style from front to rear. Sales were enthusiastic.

However, exterior similarities aside, the first generation was an all-new model in many ways. If you're shopping for a great price on a used Mini, these models may cater to your budget.

This car featured BMW-engineered hardware. This made it a sporty ride from the get-go. Its tires grip the pavement, making short work of tight corners.

This generation also provided a solid build, inside and out. If you test-drive a pre-owned Mini Cooper from this era, double-check its mileage and maintenance record to ensure its dependability. You don't want to have to replace unnecessary parts.

Visit a dealer to take these cars for a test drive. You'll enjoy their sporty ride and a solid build. The original base Mini Cooper engine was a 115-horsepower 1.6-liter inline-four.

Shoppers who crave more power should drive the Cooper S. Under its hood, this car features a supercharged version of the base engine. This engine spits out 168 horses and 162 pound-feet of torque.

The Mini Cooper Convertible John Cooper Works package was available to increase engine output even further. It has 200 horses and 177 pound-feet of torque.
