  • Expensive cabin materials
  • Intuitive controls
  • Comfortable seats
  • Powerful acceleration and handling
  • Lots of engine choices

The Mazda Mazda3 is always in the top numbers in compact car reviews. The 2019 Mazda Mazda3 is a completely new upgrade from the 2018 and earlier models, and it is the best Mazda Mazda3 yet.

The Mazda3 is available as either a sedan or a hatchback. There are many new engine choices, but the new SKYACTIV-X hybrid engine will not be available until late 2019.

Comfortable and sleek inside and out, the Mazda Mazda3 not only has a slew of options, but it also has lots of cool standard features. The infotainment system is on an 8.8-inch screen and has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Options include driver assists, a head-up display, 18-inch wheels, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, and adaptive LED headlights. Standard features include an eight-speaker audio system, a seven-inch cluster instrument display, an electronic braking system, and LED headlights.

The 2019 Mazda3 has four trims. They are the Mazda3, Mazda3 Select, Mazda3 Preferred, and the Mazda3 Premium. Each of these trims adds on more options.

The highest trim level is Premium, which gets you a head-up display, a moonroof for a great view, adaptive headlights, and leather seats. You also can choose between a manual or automatic transmission.

The 2019 Mazda3 sedan has 13.2 cubic feet of trunk space. This is an increase of just under a cubic foot from earlier models. The hatchback has 20.1 cubic feet of cargo space for easy access.

What's New for the Mazda Mazda3?

The Mazda Mazda3 is newly upgraded for 2019. This is a complete vehicle upgrade, and the Mazda Mazda3 has many new features and design details. Inside and out, the Mazda Mazda3 looks and feels new.

Some of the new upgrades and features are:

  • Reflective sheet metal along the door panels
  • New SKYACTIV-X hybrid engine (US late 2019)
  • SKYACTIV-G four-cylinder upgrades and changes
  • Improved i-ACTIV all-wheel drive
  • Redesigned interior space with more room
  • Improved insulation for less noise
  • New interior fabrics
  • Redesigned Active Driving Display
  • Digital Owner’s Manual app on center screen
  • More speakers
  • Available driver assistance
  • New standard knee airbag

The 2019 Mazda Mazda3 has a lot of new additions and changes. The most noticeable changes are the new engines. These engines use new technology, and there are improvements in existing engines as well.

The cockpit now has many adjustable features that allow drivers to change the positions of things. Whether you are short or tall, you can drive in comfort. Even the cup holders have been re-positioned.

Sheet metal on the Mazda Mazda3's side panels adds a shine that reflects light. This effect makes it seem like the car is moving when it is still.

What Are the Engine Choices for the Mazda Mazda3?

The SKYACTIV-X is an electric-hybrid engine that uses gasoline. It uses a new process called "Spark-Controlled Compression Ignition." This technology joins gasoline and diesel features in one engine that uses an electric hybrid system.

The Mazda Mazda3 is the first car to use this new system, and it combines the combustion properties of gasoline and diesel engines. This system should increase fuel efficiency and torque. Where the SKYACTIV-X exists, tests report 178 horsepower and 164 torque.

There is a new SKYACTIV-D diesel engine that is available in Europe, but it is not available in the US yet. Other engine choices include the four-cylinder 1.5-liter, 2.0-liter, and the 2.5-liter. The 1.5-liter is new, and the 2.5-liter cuts out two cylinders when not needed.

Exterior Design

The exterior is notably different, with sheet metal that swoops from front to back along the door panels. The body length is longer.

The sedan is three inches longer for a more streamlined look. The hatchback is a half-inch lower and appears more sporty. Both models have a slightly longer wheelbase, which adds more legroom.

There is a new standard color choice of Polymetal Gray. There are also new available colors of Machine Gray Metallic, Snowflake White Pearl Mica, and Soul Red Crystal.

Interior Design

The design changes in the interior cabin area are small but effective. You can adjust your seat and steering wheel more, and the armrests are longer. The gear shifter is more forward and higher, and the cup holder is in front of it.

Things are easier to see, too, with a more centered dashboard layout. The Active Driving Display is redesigned and has larger fonts. It is now placed in an 8.8-inch center display on the dashboard.

There is a new Digital Owner’s Manual app, which is really handy when you have a question. The standard sound system now has eight speakers, and the available Bose sound system now has a 12-speaker system.

What New Safety Features Does the Mazda Mazda3 Have?

The Mazda Mazda3 offers most of the current driver assists that make driving more safe. The available Driver Monitoring system uses an infrared camera and LEDs to examine the driver's facial movements. It will send an alert if the driver appears sleepy.

Front Cross Traffic Alert is available, and it detects vehicles even in your blind spots. There is a new available Cruising and Traffic Support system. This system helps with steering, braking, and accelerating in heavy traffic.

There are many built-in safety features, such as dual front airbags, side kneebags, side-impact airbags, and side air curtains. There is also an anti-lock braking system, traction control, a rearview camera, and hill launch assist.

Fuel Economy Ratings for the Mazda Mazda3

The Mazda Mazda3 gets an average gas mileage. It gets 26 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. The fuel economy is slightly lower for the hatchback models, all-drive versions, and trims with manual transmissions.

Who Is the Mazda Mazda3 Good for?

This model is good for the average driver. Thanks to its gas mileage and handling, commuters will find that this car fits their needs. There isn't a lot of legroom in the rear, so the Mazda3 probably isn't the right fit for anyone that needs to transport passengers or those who have kids.

What Compact Cars Are Similar to the Mazda Mazda3?

There are many good compact cars on the market, including the Mazda Mazda3. In this category, the Kia Forte, Honda Civic, and the Toyota Corolla are some of the Mazda Mazda3's contenders.
