Hyundai Accent: Everything You Need to Know

About the Model:

The 2019 Hyundai Accent is a subcompact sedan that provides agile handling, a roomy interior and impressive cargo capacity. Its low base price makes it one of the most affordable new cars on the market.

This small sedan seats five passengers. Both manual and automatic transmissions are offered, and power is sent to the front wheels. Offering respectable quality and comfort, the Accent gives buyers a lot for their money. It’s one of the most value-packed choices in its segment.

What’s New in the 2019 Hyundai Accent?

For the 2019 model year, the Hyundai Accent is offered in three trim levels:

  • The base SE trim comes with features such as air conditioning and a manual transmission
  • Stepping up to the SEL trim brings in amenities such as an upgraded stereo and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration
  • With the top Limited trim, you get features such as keyless ignition and heated front seats

The Accent expands and reshuffles its range of features for 2019. LED headlights are now available, and standard on the Limited trim. Base models now come with a chrome grille. The SEL trim now comes with fog lights and chrome beltline molding.

What Does the 2019 Hyundai Accent Compete With?

Hyundai’s Accent is often cross-shopped against these subcompact cars:

There are some solid picks to consider if you’re looking for a small car that’s accessibly priced. The Accent’s comfortable cabin and pleasant handling make it a strong choice in a competitive segment.

Exterior Design of the 2019 Hyundai Accent

There was a time when you could spot an economy car from miles away, but those days are gone. Today, many of the picks in this segment have a reasonably upscale appearance. This is certainly the case with the Hyundai Accent.

The Accent’s exterior design is attractive and understated. Its hood features handsome character lines that mirror the angle of the headlights. The car’s profile showcases a curved roof and an upswept beltline.

With base models, 15-inch steel wheels connect the car to the pavement. The SEL trim brings in amenities such as alloy wheels, automatic headlights and heated side mirrors. With the top Limited trim, LED headlights, a sunroof and 17-inch wheels are standard.

Interior Style in the 2019 Hyundai Accent

The Accent’s cabin provides a pleasant space for passengers. In front, the center stack is topped by a touchscreen bordered by winged air vents. The knobs and buttons used are easy to reach and identify.

Overall, the materials used are of average quality. The cabin’s components are solidly constructed. We didn’t observe any rattles or gaps.

Though this is a subcompact car, the Accent’s interior is relatively spacious. The front seats are generously sized. The second row provides enough legroom to comfortably accommodate taller passengers.

In back, the Accent’s trunk offers 13.7 cubic feet of cargo space. This makes it one of the roomiest sedans in this segment when it comes to cargo capacity.

Base models come with a tilt-adjustable steering column, as well as a folding rear seat that allows you to fit large items in the trunk. The higher trim levels feature premium options like heated front seats and automatic climate control.

What Technology Comes in the 2019 Hyundai Accent?

The Hyundai Accent offers an appealing range of tech features, especially considering the car’s modest price point. Base models come with Bluetooth connectivity and color touchscreen. The car’s standard four-speaker sound system is equipped with a CD/MP3 player.

We’re big fans of the Accent’s infotainment interface. Using it requires virtually no learning curve and the layout is intuitive.

Upgrades to the Accent include satellite radio and a larger touchscreen. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available. These amenities allow you to seamlessly connect the Accent with your devices. Keep in mind, though, an integrated navigation system isn’t available.

What Kind of Safety Features are in the 2019 Hyundai Accent?

The Accent is available with useful active safety features, but the range of amenities offered is limited. The base SE trim is equipped with a rearview camera for safe rearward maneuvers. The top Limited trim comes with a forward collision mitigation system that automatically hits the brakes to prevent a collision.

Features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance aren’t available. These amenities are offered on rival models. For example, the Honda Fit is available with both lane-keeping assistance and adaptive cruise control.

What Is the 2019 Hyundai Accent Like to Drive?

Hyundai’s Accent treats drivers to relatively agile handling. While the engine doesn’t offer a surplus of power, it’s peppy enough to allow you to execute highway maneuvers without breaking a sweat. And the car’s small footprint is compatible with narrow city streets.

The Accent’s suspension is communicative enough to deliver an engaging driving experience. At the same time, it’s comfortable enough to provide a relatively smooth ride in most situations.

Some cars in this modestly priced segment allow lots of road noise into the cabin, but that’s not the case with the Accent. This sedan’s interior remained reasonably quiet during our travels on the highway.

All models are equipped with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. This powerplant provides 130 horsepower and 119 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, and a six-speed automatic is optional. All models are front-wheel drive.

When it comes to fuel economy, the Accent achieves gas mileage of up to 28/38 mpg city/highway. Other models in this segment offer better fuel efficiency. With the Honda Fit, mileage tops out at 33/40 mpg.

Should I Buy a New Hyundai Accent?

The Hyundai Accent represents a great bargain for shoppers seeking a small sedan. Its cabin is roomier than the car’s petite footprint suggests, and its trunk offers good cargo capacity. Also, the Accent is available with a respectable range of tech amenities.

Overall, the Accent is worth strong consideration if you’re in the market for capable small car that’s accessibly priced.

Should I Buy a Used Hyundai Accent? Are There Any I Should Avoid? There are some great used Accents on the market. A 2012 redesign gave the Accent a big step up in overall quality. If you’re looking for a used Accent, we’d recommend limiting your search to models that are 2012 and newer.

How Much Does the New Hyundai Accent Cost?

The 2019 Hyundai Accent starts at $14,995 with a manual transmission. Upgrading the base model with an automatic transmission adds $1,000 to the price.

SEL models start at $17,345, and Limited models begin at $19,080. Both these trims come standard with an automatic gearbox.

The Accent is one of the most affordable new cars on the market, and it offers good value.

Model History

The History of the Hyundai Accent

Hyundai’s Accent has been on the market for over two decades. It made its debut with the 1995 model, and it was offered in sedan and hatchback body styles. The Accent was introduced as a replacement for Hyundai’s Excel.

The Accent got its first redesign in the 2000 model year when it entered its second generation. This overhaul gave the car smoother handling and a larger cabin.

A 2006 redesign took the Accent into its third generation. It added a more powerful engine, along with standard equipment like anti-lock braking and side-curtain airbags.

The Accent’s fourth generation ran from 2012 to 2017. This overhaul brought in a couple of new six-speed transmissions and improved styling.

Hyundai redesigned the Accent once again in 2018. With the launch of the car’s fifth generation, the hatchback body style was dropped. The Accent is now available solely as a sedan.
