The History of Chevrolet Cobalt
Wanting to be a major player in the compact car arena, Chevy debuted the Cobalt in 2005. It took the place of the Cavalier, one of the brand's more popular small cars for more than two decades. It offers an updated and more polished entry into the compact vehicle category.
The intention behind the vehicle was an upscale experience with enhanced safety benefits and an improvement in noise level. It was available as both a two-door coupe and a four-door sedan. The LS and LT trim packages for the 2005 version are powered by a 2.2-liter Ecotec four-cylinder motor. It has an output of 145 horsepower and was the motor used until 2009 when it bumped up to 155 horsepower.
Buyers had a choice of either a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transmission with the Ecotec naturally aspirated engine. The same braking and steering systems and suspension used in the Cavalier offered the same smooth ride.
This Chevy model offered a larger body at 2 inches longer and 1.5 inches wider than Toyota's Corolla. Compared to Honda's Civic, it is almost 5 inches longer and 1.3 inches wider. They offered better motors than the Cavalier to support the extra weight.
The 2005 vehicles were available as coupe or sedan in LS, LT, and SS trim packages. They came with naturally aspirated 2.2-liter four-cylinder motors with an output of 145 horsepower for all but the latter. It was turbocharged with a 2.0-liter motor running at 205 horsepower.
The 2006 models offered a non-supercharged SS with an Ecotec 2.4-liter inline-4 (I4) motor. There was also an LTZ trim package added to the lineup as a higher-tier option.
In 2007, Chevrolet saw the recall of almost 100,000 2005 and 2006 Cobalt coupes. According to federal regulation, the padding at the roof was insufficient. More models from the same years received recalls three years later due to power-steering issues. In 2007, consumers saw a major technology upgrade for the second-generation models along with an increase in horsepower for all but the SS. A new steering wheel, audio input jack, and radio controls were added that year to the interior.
Models through the 2007s didn't include side-curtain airbags as an option in the standard package. While their sales weren't the equivalent of the Cavalier in its prime, these cars put Chevy ahead of Ford. Enough of them sold to put Chevy above Ford as a best-selling brand in U.S. markets.
In 2008, the third generation of the Cobalt hit the market. The SS trim package became the Sport Coupe and Sport Sedan. The supercharged 2.4-liter naturally aspirated engine was replaced with a 2.0-liter turbocharged motor with a 260 horsepower output.
The new XFE trim replaced the LS and LT trim packages. It increased the vehicle's fuel economy to 25/36 miles per gallon and offered a manual transmission.
In the same year, consumers also saw a slew of new standard benefits added to the overall Cobalt lineup. Benefits included XM satellite radio along with MP3 capability and StabiliTrak stability control. Side-impact airbags along with new exterior and interior colors were also added.
Not happy with 2008's Sport names, Chevrolet went back to the SS for the fourth generation in 2009. The motor didn't change with the name but the performance display did. The exterior color palette expanded to add Silver Ice Metallic, Gold Mist Metallic, and Silver Moss Metallic.
In the coupe, a reconfigurable display could alter performance settings and read engine outputs. The rest of the trim packages got motor upgrades to 2.2-liter Ecotec I4 engines with a 155-horsepower output.
These offered better performance and fuel economy with 24/34 miles per gallon on automatic transmissions and 26/37 for manual transmissions. The same year also saw Bluetooth capabilities added.
The 2010 model saw the addition of a few new features. Filtered air conditioning, tilt steering wheels, and leather interiors became part of some of the trim packages.
The same packages also got cruise control, power controls, keyless entry, OnStar, and Pioneer stereo. Outside of the styling, it was the same as the 2009 version. In 2011, the Cruze replaced the Chevrolet Cobalt.
