With the GEO gone and gas prices high in the early 2000s, the Chevrolet Aveo was a small, fuel-efficient subcompact car. Chevrolet offered this subcompact from 2004 until 2011 to compete with Kia and Hyundai. It was available as a four-door sedan or a five-door hatchback.
It provided what it promised, which was affordable transportation. Its size presents an ideal mode of transportation in the city, particularly if there's an occasional need for a passenger or cargo. The vehicle's maneuverability further makes it ideal for city living.
Another advantage this vehicle has is fuel economy. It has 34 MPG when city driving and a four-speed automatic transmission. With its great fuel economy, it's great for those on a budget.
The base level models were basic without bells and whistles, but they were available for four figures, which appealed to many. The SVM models had no air conditioning or anti-lock brakes, but they were affordable for students or families just starting out.
Consumers who wanted a nice balance of value and convenience opted for the mid-level model that was first just Aveo and later LS. It included air conditioning, and there were options available such as a CD player or anti-lock brakes. The driver's seat was height-adjustable, and there was power steering.
Top-level models, first called LS and later LT, added power locks and windows with air conditioning, a CD player, and alloy wheels. There was an optional sunroof, and beginning in 2006, there was also optional cruise control.
The power for this vehicle was a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with an output of 106 horsepower and 104 pound-foot of torque. There was a small boost in 2010 to 108 horsepower and 107 pound-foot of torque. However, this was not enough of a boost to make an impact on sales or popularity.
There were two transmissions offered with the standard being a five-speed manual that enjoyed the best fuel economy. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) returned a rating of 27/37 MPG for that standard powertrain. An available four-speed automatic transmission was also offered, and it got 26/34 MPG.
The performance wasn't one of its selling points despite its low curb weight of 2,600 pounds. The vehicle could achieve 0 to 60 miles per hour in about 10 seconds with the four-speed automatic transmission. Downshifting can be sluggish in such a circumstance, even with the accelerator pressed to the floor.
Uncomplicated a ride as this is, there are few distractions that allow for a safer driving experience. There's no trying to read messages or respond to myriad alarms or alerts. There's no intricate instruments panel to futz with as you might see in higher priced vehicles.
The driver is free to enjoy a hassle-free ride aided by an optional anti-lock brake system. It holds the line during straight driving and only has a minimal lean when taking corners at higher speeds. There's minimal motor, tire, and wind noise as is common for subcompacts.
The motor does, however, provide a quiet, smooth ride even on the highway. The air conditioning could cause the powertrain to become noticeably labored, which isn't a huge concern for everyone. For many, Chevrolet's Aveo was an affordable option that provided reliable transportation on a budget.
Giving the illusion that it's truly bigger than it really is, this vehicle features side contouring with lines extending from front to rear. The shoulders formed over wheel openings only added to the effect. Bold, round taillights, a chrome-accented grille, and three-dimensional headlights add to the exterior appeal.
The interior offers a standard 60/40 split with a folding backseat. The front passenger seat folds flat to further expand your cargo area for bigger items you need to haul. The inner cabin features imitation wood trim and faux leather, and while it's sparse, it's spacious with comfortable seats and lots of headroom. What Are the Available Safety Features?

First introduced in 2004 as an affordable, subcompact car, the Chevy Aveo replaced the Metro as Chevrolet's top economy car. Through a partnership with South Korean automaker Daewoo, it came to North America. The first 2004 model was available as a five-passenger sedan and hatchback.
The 2004 model had a 16-valve, 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine with a 103-horsepower output and 107 pound-feet of torque. The engine provided a combined city/highway fuel economy of 30 MPG. Either a four-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed manual transmission could be paired with the engine.
The base model in 2004 came with AM/FM stereo, dual front cupholders, and tilt steering. The LS version threw in air conditioning, a CD player, power windows, and remote keyless entry. There was also a special value or SVM trim level offered at a lower price.
2005 brought changes to the trim levels. While the SVM stayed the same, the base Aveo became the LS and the LS became the LT. The LT packaged added heated exterior mirrors.
Side airbags became standard on all trim packages, and the suspension became more responsive. The LT package added remote keyless entry and cruise control.
In 2007, the sedans underwent a major overhaul with a slightly larger body and a sportier look. In competing with Nissan's Versa and Honda's fit, the automaker created a new look. The hatchback kept its styling and became the Aveo5.
The SVM models became eliminated in 2007, and the updated sedans saw the addition of auxiliary music stereo jacks. Some new features became standard in 2009 in the economy car like OnStar and GM Oil Life monitoring systems.
2009 also saw a boost in horsepower with the Ecotec engines bumping it up to 106 horsepower. It boosted to 108 in 2010. Despite the changes, the vehicle never caught on with North American audiences.
In 2012, the Chevrolet Aveo underwent a redesign to become the subcompact Sonic in North America.
