MDX technology includes available all-wheel drive and a long list of safety and convenience features. Acura is known for quality and reliability, and the award-winning MDX is a market leader for the brand.

Among luxury SUVs, the MDX is quite affordable, and Acura customer loyalty proves that buyers find value in this model.

What Does the Acura MDX Compete With?

The Acura MDX competes in the three-row luxury midsize SUV class. Rival offerings include:

MDX buyers want a premium cabin, good engine power, and enough space to carry the whole family. Because of that, the top-trim Advance Package and the Entertainment Package are popular selections with the MDX. All-weather handling is important, too, so all-wheel drive is a popular option.

The Advance Package includes:

  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Parking sensors
  • Navigation
  • Premium audio
  • Heated and ventilated leather front seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Heated second-row seats (with six-seat option)
  • Surround-view camera
  • Active suspension

The Entertainment Package is a standalone option. It combines with the Technology or Advance packages to provide:

  • 9.0-inch or 16.2-inch second-row video screen
  • Wireless headphones
  • Remote control for the video system
  • 110-volt power outlet
  • Additional audio speakers
  • HDMI inputs for games or video devices

With these options, the Acura MDX is a perfect choice for larger families looking for a premium SUV experience.

Exterior Design of the 2019 Acura MDX

The MDX has not changed much since its 2017 update. Acura has added only a few appearance items and the A-Spec package since then.

The MDX is conservative, designed to blend in on the highway. Acura gives all its SUVs good proportions. The MDX certainly looks up-to-date and fashionable. It has luxury features like LED lights and large 18-inch or 20-inch wheels.

All MDX models include these exterior features:

  • Power moonroof
  • LED headlights and taillights
  • Power tailgate
  • Automatic headlights
  • Heated side mirrors

Additionally, these features are optional:

  • Smart key entry
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • LED puddle lights
  • LED fog lights
  • Power folding side mirrors

Interior Style in the 2019 Acura MDX

Acura interiors are among the best in the auto industry. The base MDX cabin is a comfortable luxury space. Leather seats are standard on all trims. The A-Spec package has a more sport-oriented interior with perforated leather and suede upholstery. The Advance Package features contrast stitching.

These interior features are standard on all MDX models:

  • Leather upholstery
  • 12-way power front seats
  • Heated front seats
  • Adjustable second-row seats
  • Seven-passenger seating
  • Zone climate control
  • LATCH system

These items are optional or part of a trim package:

  • Second row captain’s chairs (seating for six passengers)
  • GPS-linked climate control
  • Second-row sunshades
  • Heated steering wheel

The MDX offers about the same cargo space as a passenger car trunk behind the third row seats. With the third row down, you get about as much space as a compact SUV. With all rear seats down, you get over 90 cubic feet. That’s enough space to carry a washing machine.

The 2019 Acura MDX is a technology showcase. Acura provides an advanced infotainment system with phone integration and voice recognition. An 8.0-inch color display provides the interface. The display offers instant access to climate and audio controls. Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are supported.

The MDX allows you to play your music through Bluetooth or a USB port. There are five standard USB ports in the MDX, and two more are optional.

There are also two levels of optional second-row entertainment systems. They are available in the Technology Package and the Advance Package. Both allow second-row passengers to play games or watch videos using wireless headphones. The driver and passenger can choose their own audio entertainment.

Standout optional tech features for the MDX include:

  • Spoken song selection
  • Two third-row USB ports
  • Premium audio system
  • Real-time traffic updates
  • Traffic re-routing

What Kind of Safety Features are in the Acura MDX?

The 2019 Acura MDX is among the safest SUVs on the market. This model earned the full five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rates the MDX as a Top Safety Pick.

Standard safety features in the MDX include:

  • Multi-view rear camera
  • Collision mitigation braking system
  • Road departure mitigation
  • Adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow
  • Lane departure warning and lane keeping assistance
  • Forward collision warning

Optional safety equipment includes:

  • Surround-view camera system for a bird’s eye view
  • Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic monitor
  • Head-up collision warning on the windshield
  • Front and rear parking sensors

What is the Acura MDX Like to drive?

The 2019 Acura MDX is one of the most pleasant midsize SUVs on the market. In any trim, the MDX offers a smooth, firm ride and responsive steering. Fuel economy is acceptable at up to 20 MPG city and 27 MPG highway with the gas engine, or 26 MPG city and 27 MPG highway with the hybrid.

The hybrid all-wheel-drive system is nearly magical in providing traction under all conditions. With the hybrid, the rear wheels are powered by two electric motors that work together to help the MDX through corners. The front wheels are powered by a traditional gas and electric hybrid combination.

In the MDX, you’re sitting up high, and the SUV provides excellent visibility in all directions. The cabin is quiet inside, which helps avoid distraction.

Should I Buy a Current Acura MDX?

If you’re looking for a midsize luxury SUV, you simply cannot make a better choice than the Acura MDX. It’s among the most affordable of the luxury class SUVs. It’s also among the best in terms of quality, features, and performance.

Should I buy a Used Acura MDX? Are There Any I Should Avoid?

Choosing a certified pre-owned MDX is easy. If the vehicle is 2017 or newer, it’s still under the four-year, 50,000-mile factory warranty. The powertrain is covered for six years or 70,000 miles, so you can buy any late-model Acura MDX with confidence.

How Much Does the New Acura MDX Cost?

The 2019 Acura MDX starts at $45,295 for the standard trim with front-wheel-drive. Selecting all-wheel-drive adds $2,000. The MDX Sport Hybrid starts at $53,795. The top Advance Package with a gas engine costs $59,045, while the Sport Hybrid with Advance Package costs $60,545. All prices included a destination charge of $995.

The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is.

Male: Average sized adult male dummy in 35-MPH crash into fixed barrier. Rating is evaluation of injury to head, neck, chest, legs. Female: Small-sized adult female dummy in 35-mph crash into fixed barrier. Rating is evaluation of injury to head, neck, chest, legs.
